African Fashion Week Edmonton (AFWE) was created in 2013 by Gilles Wouanko. Born and raised in Cameroon, Gilles has always had the passion for fashion and wanting to create his own clothing line, an inner drive he explored during his stay in major fashion capitals like Paris and Montreal. Not only did it foster his urge for the fashion and entertainment industry, but also was an integral part upon his re-location to Edmonton; Where he realized a need and demand for African fashion. AFWE since then has been a glamorous event giving the opportunity to local and international African designers to share their talents with the people of Edmonton.
AFWE is the most high profile non-profit community event in Edmonton. Held annually during the Black History Month, AFWE continues to be one of the largest and most anticipated annual events celebrating African talent and luxury fashion in Edmonton.
The African Fashion is a growing industry and the demand is very present, designers need more exposure and fashionable people want to have more access to the African fashion. We see big designers like Gucci and Givenchy create African inspired designs or designs with African Fabric or print. It is an opportunity for medias and companies to get involve in huge trend.
